Prayer calculation methods compared: ISNA, MWL, Umm al-Qura and the rest

Calculation methods differ almost entirely in two numbers: how far below the horizon the sun sits at Fajr and at Isha. Common conventions range from 12° to 19.5°, which can move Fajr by more than half an hour at the same location. Use whichever method your local masjid follows, because that is the congregation you will pray with.

What a “method” actually is

Three of the five daily prayer times need no convention at all. Dhuhr begins just after the sun crosses the meridian. Maghrib begins at sunset. Both are observable events with unambiguous astronomical definitions, which is why every app agrees on them to within a minute or two.

Fajr and Isha are different. They are defined by twilight — the light before sunrise and after sunset — and twilight has no sharp edge. It fades. So each convention picks a solar depression angle: how far below the horizon the sun's centre must sit for that twilight to count as begun or ended.

That is nearly the whole of what a calculation method is. Two numbers.

Two entries there break the pattern and are worth understanding. Umm al-Qura does not use an Isha angle at all — it fixes Isha at 90 minutes after Maghrib, extended to 120 minutes during Ramadan. And Moonsighting Committee does not hold a fixed angle in either direction; it adjusts with latitude and time of year, which is why it degrades more gracefully far from the equator.

How much the choice is worth in minutes

At mid latitudes, each degree of solar depression is worth roughly four to six minutes of clock time near the equinoxes, and more in winter when the sun's path is shallower.

So the practical span between ISNA at 15° and the Egyptian authority at 19.5° is on the order of twenty to thirty minutes for Fajr in a city like Chicago or London — every day, in the same direction. That is enough to matter for suhoor during Ramadan, which is where most people first notice that their app and their masjid disagree.

Where fixed angles break down entirely

Above roughly 48° latitude, there are weeks in summer when the sun never descends 15° or 18° below the horizon at all. Twilight persists all night. The calculation does not return a late time — it returns nothing, because the event never happens.

Every method needs a fallback rule for this, and the rules disagree with each other more than the angles do. That is a separate problem with its own conventions, covered in prayer times at high latitudes.

How to choose

Pick the method your local masjid uses. Not because the others are wrong, but because the point of a prayer time is largely to pray it with other people, and a twenty-minute offset from the jama'ah is a practical problem that no amount of astronomical correctness solves.

If you do not know what they use, take their printed timetable and compare Fajr for a few dates across different seasons against the methods above. It will usually identify itself within two or three comparisons. Some mosques apply a fixed offset on top of a standard method, which shows up as a consistent few minutes' difference.

If your Asr is the time that disagrees rather than Fajr or Isha, the method is not the cause — that is the madhab shadow rule, set separately.

Which calculation method is the most accurate?
None of them, in the sense the question implies. The astronomy is settled and identical across methods; what differs is the convention for how far below the horizon the sun must be at Fajr and Isha. That is a judgement about observed twilight, not a measurement, so methods differ without any of them being wrong.
